Two-step approach
The price of tickets for passenger trains will be indexed from August 8 to October 1, 2014. The fares for these trains as well as other tickets will increase twofold, each time – by 10% for all categories of passenger coaches, except two-berth compartments and Intercity+ trains, the press-office of Ukrzalyznytsia reports.
The resolution says even the increase in ticket prices will not make fares economically grounded. Tickets for the rail in Ukraine are the cheapest in the CIS countries.
Price indexation will be carried out pursuant to resolution of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine dd. 21.07.2014, under No. 332 titled On Approval of Changes to Domestic Rail Tariffs for Transportation of Passengers, Luggage and Cargo Luggage. This resolution was published in official gazette No.61 for August 8. However, luggage and cargo luggage tariffs will not be raised. The rise in prices in December 2014 as compared to a similar month a year ago amounts to 21%.
Increase in fares is due to the necessity to gradually lessen cross subsidies paid for passenger transportation at the cost of cargo conveyance, what will be enable to approach the economically grounded level and partially cover costs arisen due to hike in prices of rail products needed to ensure safety of passengers and secure transportation.
