A draft law on the judicial system and status of judges considered by the Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine proposes to unite the Supreme Council of Justice and High Qualification Committee of Judges in one judicial body, Prime-Minister of Ukraine Arseny Yatseniuk said at an on-site meeting of the Ukraine’s CM commenting on a draft law on court structure and status of judges proposed for further consideration, according to LIGABusinesInform (ЛІГАБізнесІнформ).
“As regards integration of the Supreme Council of Justice with the High Qualification Committee of Judges – I think there cannot be many discussions. These authorities should be united to form a single judicial body that could perform its constitutional function with a view to facilitate fulfilment of duties by judges, create an oversight authority over judges, deal with appointment of judges, and to eliminate political pressure on the judicial branch”,- he said.
As has been reported, Prime-Minister Yatseniuk advises the members of the Supreme Court of Ukraine to exchange opinions on a new version of the law On Judicial System and Status of Judges that can be submitted for consideration of the next-convocation Verkhovna Rada. He is of view that the document envisages, in particular, an unobstructed access to justice and transparency of court proceedings.
