The General Prosecutor of Ukraine has been dismissed more than a month after his statement.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has voted for the dismissal from the post of General Prosecutor of Ukraine Victor Shokin. The relevant decision was endorsed by 289 deputies at the parliamentary session on Tuesday, March 29.

The Shokin’s dismissal was endorsed by People’s Front, Samopomich, Batkivshchyna, Radical Party and Block of Petro Poroshenko.

As Correspondent.net reports, on February 19 President Petro Poroshenko submitted to the Verkhovna Rada the representation for dismissing Victor Shokin from the post of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.

In this representation the president demanded the resignation of government, but the Rada failed to dismiss Arsenii Yatseniuk and his ministries.

Previously the deputy general prosecutor – the main military prosecutor Anatolii Matios stated that GPOU has the candidate for Shokin’s post. The prosecutor’s office suggested that the next head will be “a man with Ukrainian surname”.

As it was reported, the deputies in the Verkhovna Rada collected signatures for the appointment of Lutsenko as the General Prosecutor of Ukraine. The collection of signatures was initiated by the people’s deputy from BPP Ruslan Solvar. The Head of faction “Block of Petro Poroshenko” in the Verkhovna Rada Lutsenko rebutted information on his appointment and said that he does not intend to become the prosecutor.

Shokin was appointed by the General Prosecutor of Ukraine in February 2015. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the General Prosecutor is appointed and dismissed by the president upon the consent of the parliament. In addition, the parliament has the opportunity to propose a motion of non-confidence to the General Prosecutor by certain number of votes, which results in its dismissal.

It should be noted that, after returning from vacation, Shokin supposedly went on sick leave. This gives him the opportunity to attempt to reinstate in office through court after dismissal.
