Prosecutor calls for preservation of military property
General Prosecutor of Ukraine in 2013 initiated 56 criminal proceedings for committing acquisitive crimes against military property, announced Chief of Department of Supervision over Compliance with military laws Prosecutor General of Ukraine Mykola Golomsha, according to the press service of the GPU.
Office of General Prosecutor made an appeal to the Minister of Defence of Ukraine and demands to ensure the safety of military equipment, its proper accounting and legal use.
- Prosecutor's investigation found evidence of embezzlement by officers of military units of ammunition, component parts to military equipment, sales of surplus property at reduced prices, - said M. Golomsha.
- Prosecutors discovered theft of military property and official negligence as to its preservation two dozen military units. There have been crimes related to the theft of ammunition and illegal spending of ammunition when providing shooting practices to third parties. They discovered theft of 340 tons of fuel for rocket engines worth over 5 million UAH, night vision devices from the latest armament - T-64 «Bulat» for more than half a million hryvnia etc. - says Deputy Head of Department.
The official mentioned that defense department does not control preservation of military property, and the work of internal audit function is not effective enough: «A significant number of military equipment worth nearly 2.5 billion UAH is located without sufficient legal grounds at the enterprises of the State Concern «Ukroboronprom». Some part of the military property is transferred to sports clubs, driving schools. However, the defense department does not monitor preservation of this property and, as a consequence, some is already lost «.
«In the submission we demand from the Minister of Defense not only to ensure the safety of military property, but also to bring to justice the defense department officials who are guilty of violations detected», - said Mykola Golomsha.
