The threat of hacker attacks on banks is growing, and the financial institutions will have to enhance security measures, SWIFT Chairman Yawar Shar said, UBR reports.
“This rapidly developing threat (hacker attacks) is the game-changing factor”, Reuters quotes Shah.
In his turn, SWIFT CEO Gottfried Leibbrandt told that in summer the hackers hacked into several bank systems. In two cases, the hackers managed to forward payment orders, however they were not fulfilled. In the third case, the financial institution installed the supplement to SWIFT software, which allowed the bank system to find illegal penetration. “Money were lost in neither of these cases”, Leibbrandt informed.
SWIFT did not specify what banks were attacked as well as in which countries they are located. It is noted that SWIFT own information networks were not hacked.
In late August, SWIFT reported on hacker attacks on the banks, which are the clients of the system. It was noted then that several cyberattacks were successful, and the clients lost money.
SWIFT is the international interbank system of information communication and payment transfer. More than 10.8 thousand largest organizations are connected to more than 200 countries.
