On Monday, May 22, the General Assembly of the World Health Organization started in Geneva. This meeting is annually conducted with the main decisions being approved, determining the organization’s work in the next year. The director of organization is also elected at this meeting through voting, Kiev News reports.
However, out of 190 participating countries, four states were deprived of the voting right: Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Comoro Islands and Ukraine. According to WHO, the membership of all four countries was suspended due to economic reasons – they failed to pay membership fees. The Somali’s participation was also in question, but the government of this country managed to swiftly solve these problems.
Three candidates for the position of WHO’s Director General are Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from Ethiopia, Dr. David Nabarro from the UK and Dr. Sania Nishtar from Pakistan.
