World Bank counts losses
In 1980-2012 natural disasters and catastrophes have incurred losses of $3.8 trillion to the global economy. This information is presented in the report of the World Bank, LIHA BiznesInform informs.
According to the report, at the beginning of this period, losses averaged $50 billion a year. To date, natural disasters are causing losses of a $200 billion a year.
Experts point out that damages from storms, floods and droughts have amounted to $2.5 trillion during the period. About 2.5 million people have fallen casualty to these disasters.
In monetary terms, developing countries took the hardest blow from natural disasters, with damages in 2001-2006 amounting to 1% of GDP. Developed countries lost ten times less during the same period.
