The stolen data included the personal information, in particular the names of users and their e-mails – Correspondent.net reports.
US Department of Justice pressed charges on the case over hacking Yahoo user accounts against the group of hackers, including two Russia’s FSS officers.
In autumn, the Internet company informed about the largest leakage of personal data of 500 million users, which happened in 2014. Yahoo claimed that it considers that the government of certain country is behind it; however, they did not provide any details.
The stolen data included the personal information, including the names and their emails, birthdates, phone numbers and encrypted passwords as well as “unencrypted secret questions and answers to them”, which were used for additional verification of the access.
The charges were pressed against two Russia’s FSS officers and two hackers, presumably hired by Russians. These are the first charges with the cybercrime, pressed against the representatives of Russian intelligence services, Washington Post notes.
The Ministry of Justice charges them with hacker activities, wire fraud, commercial secret theft, economic spying.
According to mass media, the charges were not connected with hacking the servers of the National Committee of the Democratic Party and FBI investigation of the presumable interference of Russia in the presidential elections in 2016.
It was previously reported that Yahoo secretly scanned the millions of email accounts of their users upon the request of US intelligence services.
