U.S. Treasury Department delivered to U.S. Congress the valuable insights, which will help investigate the case about possible business ties of President Donald Trump with Russia, RIA News reports quoting CNN and the sources familiar with the matter.
The documents were submitted to intelligence committees of both Houses of the Congress from the special forces unit of the U.S. Department of Treasury – Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The agency deals with the monitoring of the movement of financial flows and “money laundering” schemes. The FinCEN collects information from the banks worldwide.
The review of financial documentation and transactions is “crucially important” for investigation, Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Adam Schiff said to CNN.
During last weeks, the parliamentarians from the Democratic Party repeatedly filed queries to FinCEN, requesting to submit the financial reporting, necessary for investigation. Previously, in the Senate, the U.S. declined to appoint Trump’s candidate Sigal Maldeker to the post of FinCEN Director until the agency satisfies their request, CNN reports.
On Wednesday, U.S. Department of Justice appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller as the special prosecutor on the investigation of “interference of Russia” in U.S. presidential elections in 2016. U.S. intelligence services repeatedly accused Moscow of the attempt to influence the outcome of election campaign. Russia denied these accusations, President’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov called them “absolutely unfounded”.
