The device does not require replacing all existing locks. It is mounted on the shut-off pin on the inside of the door, by means of a special adapter.

The product is self-powered, so it is not failures in the central power grid affected. Home owners are informed of the low battery by a signal signal.

As the keys are transmitted using Bluetooth-technology rather than Wi-Fi, the "smart" lock does not depend on the availability of a WLAN.

Keys to August Smart Lock are managed via an app for smartphones and PC. Home owner can give keys to relatives, friends or, say, a maid. It is also possible to set the code’s duration and even determine certain days and hours when it is active. The program shows statistics of visits for each key and allows to block the lock at any moment.

The app also provides for social functions: one may leave photos and messages that visitors will see after they get inside.

Smart lock has status indicator that signals red when the door is blocked and green when the access is open.

In case of losing the smartphone the user may block the app and delete all e-passes. Besides, the lock is not linked to any specific address, and data exchange, as mentioned, is encoded.

August Smart Lock costs about $200 and is set to hit the shelves before this year end.
