The new President encouraged General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler to expand production in the USA, but not abroad, the Voice of America reports.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump had meeting with top executives of three largest US automakers, encouraging them to expand production in the USA, but not abroad.

«I want the plants for the production of vehicles, which are sold here, to be constructed here», Trump wrote in his Twitter.

The day before the meeting with top executives of General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler, Trump had meeting in the White House with other leading business executives and encouraged them to create more jobs in US industry. Before his inauguration as the 45th US President, which took place on Friday, Trump repeatedly criticized US automakers for expansion of production in Mexico and praised those companies, which announced about their plans to create more jobs in the USA.

Trump warned business executives that he will try to do his best that the Congress imposes a «considerable border tax», perhaps, in the amount of 35 percent, for companies, who transfer their production abroad, and then import the goods back in the USA in order to sell them to US consumers. The new president also promised to «massively» reduce legislative limitations and taxes, in order to give US companies a stimulus to remain in the country.

The industry plays a leading role in US economy, which is the world’s largest; however, since 2000, this sector lost 5 million jobs due to automation of production processes and the transfer of factories to other countries with lower labor costs. The workers of Mexican car-making factories obtain five times less than US colleagues do, or even less.

Currently, more than 12.3 million US citizens are employed in the manufacturing industry, or each tenth worker, which is the considerable indicator, but not so high, as in 1960, when the fourth of the working population worked in this industry.
