The implementation of Nord Stream 2 will increase Europe’s susceptibility to the disruption of Russian gas supplies and will inflict economic damages to Ukraine, Spokesperson of U.S. Department of State Heather Nauert said, European Truth reports.
“We agree with many our European partners that Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream can strengthen Russia’s domination on Euroepan gas markets. It reduces opportunities for diversification of energy resources. It can create risks in already tense Baltic region, and it will contribute to achievement of Russia’s goal to disrupt Ukraine – we are especially worried about it – terminating Ukraine’s role as the transit country for exporting Russian gas to Europe”, she said.
In addition, Nauert noted that the construction of Nord Stream 2 concentrated about 75 percent of import of Russian gas in EU through the single route that can increase Europe’s susceptibility to any disruption of Russian gas supplies.
“That is why we consider that these two projects will allow Gazprom to close transit through Ukraine and satisfy the demand in West Europe, but it can economically disrupt Ukraine, inflicting USD 2 billion losses for annual transit”, she added.
